Signature Speaking Topics
Black Moms Matter: A Conversation on Black Maternal Health
The topic of Black maternal health is near and dear to Gina’s heart. During her pregnancy she developed preeclampsia, gestational hypertension, and gestational diabetes, leading to an emergency Cesarean section. This is a personal story but not an isolated one, and Gina’s talk will highlight the scope of the Black maternal health crisis. Research shows that Black women are disproportionately affected by maternal health issues and have higher rates of maternal mortality than women of other races. Socioeconomic status and educational levels aren’t factors, as women like Serena Williams, Beyonce, and Gina herself have all faced life-threatening complications during pregnancy and labor. With this powerful talk, Gina will provide statistics, policy information, and tangible solutions, while encouraging women to advocate for themselves, recognize when it’s time for them to seek extra help, and to understand that they aren’t alone.
